    The city has many beautiful gardens, and is known for its poetry, music, and fine Nawabi cuisine. This historic city, still has the traces of Mughal architecture and lifestyle alive.

    Lucknow, along with Agra and Varanasi, is in the Uttar Pradesh Heritage Arc.

     

    Cuisine:
    Lucknow is famous for its own distinct "Nawabi"-style cuisine. 
    •  The 'Tunde ke kabab' is famous all over the world.
    •  Nahari, a dish prepared using mutton, is very popular among non-vegetarians. 
    •  Sheermal is a type of sweet bread (paratha) prepared only in Lucknow. 
    •  Lucknow is also famous for its delicious chaats, street food, kulfi's, paan and sweets.

     

    Shopping:
    Lucknow is known for embroidery works. Make sure you pick up a Chikankari styled salwar.

    Bara Imambara / Asafi Imambara

    Bara Imambara is a shrine built by the Nawab Asaf-ud-daula in 1784. It is one of the largest buildings in Lucknow. The name ‘Bara Imambara’ is an Urdu word, wherein the word ‘Bara’ means big and ‘Imambara’ means the shrine complex. The complex includes the Asfi mosque and the Bhulbhulaiya. The Asfi mosque contains the tomb of Asaf-ud-daula. And Bhul Bhulaiya, is incredible maze. It is the only maze in India and it supports the massive structure of this whole complex from the underground; thus making Bara Imambara to be known as the world's largest unsupported structure.

      Hussainabad Imambara / Chota Imambara

      Chota Imambara is another historical complex built in 1838 by Nawab Muhammad Shah Ali. The tombs of Mohammed Ali Shah and his mother are located over here. The walls of the monument are decorated with Arabic verses that have been carved beautifully by efficient craftsmen. The structure has an imposing white colored dome and many pillars or minarets. The interiors of the monument are decorated beautifully with elaborate chandeliers, mirrors with gold frames, the majestic throne of the King can be seen. There are small miniatures of the Taj Mahal on either side of the monument. Right outside the complex also lays the 4 storied Satkhanda, an unfinished watchtower or observatory which was supposed to have 7 stories. The Nawab wanted to make a tower as tall as the Qutab Minar and design like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The Hussainabad Imambara is beautifully decorated during the festival of Moharrum.

        British Residency

        British Residency is currently regarded as a National Monument. It is the place where the historic battle known as the Seige of Lucknow was fought in 1857. The site was then the residence of the British Resident General which was stormed during the battle. The structure though in ruins after the battle has still been preserved till date with the bullet grazed walls and is surrounded by gardens which attract a great number of tourists.
