Sultan Battery is 6 kms away from city centre. It is a historic place that attracts lot of visitors. Sultan Battery was constructed by Tipu Sultan in 1784. This watch tower was built of black stones to obstruct war ships from entering the Gurpur river which was the major route for English invasion. Though the place holds the watch tower, it looks much like a fort with mounting places for cannon. There is an underground storage area under the tower which was used to store gunpowder. If one climbs to the top of the watch tower by stairs, one can get a panoramic view of the beautiful Arabian Sea.

St. Mary's island are a group of small islands in the Arabian Sea, lying a little to the north of the port of Malpe in Udupi. It is at a distance of 67 kms from Mangalore. When Vasco Da Gama landed here in 1498, he named one of these islands El Padron de Santa Maria - hence the name St. Mary's island. The main attractions of these islands are the basalt rocks which have crystallized into vertical hexagonal blocks.
The only way of getting to the islands is by 20 minutes boat ride. Regular ferry service ply from the Malpe fishing harbor which is at a distance of 6 kms.
