    Velankanni is a Christian Pilgrimage destination; and attracts lot of devotees for the famous Church of Our Lady of Velankanni.
    It is popularly known as the "Lourdes of the East".

    In ancient times, Velankanni was a port that traded with Rome and Greece. And was not a well noticed place.
    The place got it significance after the miracles that triggered to build the famous Church of Our Lady of Velankanni. Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared in Velankanni in 1560 and the town’s rich religious character started from this time.

    The church's founding is attributed to three miracles: 
    •  the apparition of Mary and Jesus to a slumbering shepherd boy, 
    •  the curing of a lame buttermilk vendor, 
    •  the survival of Portuguese sailors assaulted by a violent sea storm.


    The annual festival of 'Feast of the Nativity of Mary' from 29 August to 8 September attracts millions of pilgrim from all over the world.

    Our Lady of Velankanni church / Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health

    Our Lady of Velankanni is a celebrated Roman Catholic church and Blessed Virgin Mary believed to have appeared in the town. The church is a famous pilgrim centre.
